Self taught designer Julia Clancey first began her career as a fashion stylist in both the music and advertising industries. Her venture into accessory design came as a natural progression from her styling work, creating specific pieces for shoots. The first piece of body jewellery made by Julia was shot by Corrine Day for UK VOGUE. In 2010 she launched her own private show room in West Hollywood to cater for her loyal following of private clients and red carpet clientele. Her work has been worn by many high-profile people including Megan Fox, Juliette Lewis, and Dita Von Teese and has been featured in publications such as VOGUE, W Magazine, Grazia and ELLE.
Julia debuted as a costume designer in 2011 working with Britsh director Bernard Rose on 2 Jacks.
The setting of the movie in Hollywood’s film industry was a perfect backdrop for her collections and esthetique with impressive cast of Sienna Miller , Danny and Jack Huston, Jaquelline Biset , Billy Zane to name a few.
Working alongside Bernard Rose on his next project ‘Sex Tapes’ this is an area she is both enjoying and developing with her own short fashion film now being developed.
The essence of the brand is to create luxurious and opulent pieces to be cherished and passed down through the generations. This bridge between old and new can be seen throughout her work with a recurring vintage, 1920′s theme and feel in her accessory design. “My inspiration has deep seeded roots in both vintage and historical costume. There are influences from the art deco period and it’s architecture. Erté was without doubt where my direction with the accessories came from. I discovered some intricate vintage beadwork in a Parisian market and the line evolved from there.”
Each of her unique pieces are all hand embroidered onto silks using Swarovski pearls and crystals and Julia’s whole accessory line is in fact endorsed by Swarovski Elements. The line consists of belts, head pieces, masks, body drapes, necklaces, cuffs and hand drapes. The pieces are bold, dramatic and enriched with all that is opulent and graceful. The inspiration behind the accessory line are powerful, heroic women who have graced us from the past to present. From the courageous strength of Roman Goddess Boadicea to the Mata Hari’s of modern day, in each piece the boldness of these women can be felt. For this season Julia was inspired by a pearl necklace and ruby and pearl ring, each left to her respectively by both her Grandmothers. This can be seen in the colour palette for the couture collection which is in rich ruby reds, jet black and silver. For the debut Bridal collection the colour palette will be more muted in cream and with pearls.
Julia now splits her time between London, New York and Los Angeles developing her collections. For more information on any of the collections please visit www.juliaclancey.com
